This luxurious scarf/shawl is from Kullu, Himachal Pradesh in the Indian Himalayas where the locals know how to keep warm as the mercury drops low in winter. It is handwoven from fine wool with a subtle herringbone weave in black and red across the body of the shawl, with solid black borders ending in hand knotted fringes. It measures 56 x 181cm.
The weaver of this shawl belongs to one of the oldest weaving co-operatives in India which, since 1944, has developed many benefits for its members including schools, health clinics and fair wages. The cooperative has been awarded a gold medal in a national award from the Indian Government Ministry of Textiles.
