Kantha stitched vintage sari scarf #163
$75.00 / Sold Out
This delightful double sided scarf is a new item hand made from worn vintage saris using traditional Kantha stitching, still the most popular form of embroidery practised by rural women in India. The floral fabric looks like it comes from the 50s and is contrasted beautifully with the plainer green fabric on the reverse.
New fabrics are created from vintage saris, joined together in tiny rows of stitches. The fabrics are placed back to back and the stitching creates a new stronger fabric with contrasting colours and patterns flashing as the cloth moves.
The stitching on the cloth gives it a slight wrinkled, wavy effect. There may be patches or tiny holes, loose threads and not so perfect edging, but this is part of the charm, and the tiny stitches - placed by hand - hold it all together.
Truly one of a kind - this can never be repeated.
This piece was lovingly made by women in a village near Jaipur, India. It measures 198 x 48cm.
